Council Leader Ken Guild and other Council candidates and activists were out in force as Mr Salmond shook hands, posed for photographs and kissed babies.

Commenting, Councillor Guild said: “Our campaign is going well in Dundee and our candidates are working hard in every ward across the city to ensure the re-election of an SNP Council so that we can move Dundee forward.

“It is always nice to see the First Minister in Dundee and it indicates how important Dundee is to the SNP that he has visited twice in a fortnight.”

Senior SNP Council Members Take Final Bow

JIm, Liz, Ken and Andy

Three senior SNP members of Dundee City Council, Liz Fordyce, Jim Barrie and Andy Dawson attended their final Council meeting on Tuesday evening as they are stepping down before May’s election.

Prior to the meeting, the SNP Group held a presentation for the trio with speeches and tributes paid for their endeavours over the years, each being presented with gifts and cards.

Group Leader Ken Guild and colleagues praised the outstanding work of all three who had helped to build the SNP into a strong Administration team to move Dundee forward.

Liz Fordyce, ward member for Maryfield and presently Education Convenor of Dundee City Council, first joined SNP in 1965 on her 21st birthday was elected in 1999 and was appointed Education Convenor in March 2009 when the SNP became the Administration of Dundee City Council.

Speaking of her decision, she said: “I am standing down as a Councillor because I feel the time is right and I am leaving on a positive note.

“I would like to thank the constituents of Baxter Park and Maryfield Wards for allowing me the privilege of serving them, all the Council Officers and in particular those in the Education Department, all the teachers for the sterling work they do, the Schools Music Theatre for brilliant entertainment over the years and my fellow Councillors.

“Since 1999, I have seen many changes in Baxter Park Ward including restoration of Baxter Park and regeneration of Stobswell area – 2001 the Morgan Fire – 2004 highlight was re-opening of Morgan Academy.

“As Education Convener, I have visited every primary and secondary school in Dundee and I have met thousands of very nice pupils: hundreds of inspiring dedicated teachers and support staff.

“I have enjoyed the work and I am confident that I am leaving behind a school estate that is one of the best in Scotland.  It does have areas that are poor but this is being addressed with new builds at West End, Whitfield and Balgarthno Road.

“We also have one of the best teacher to pupil ratios in Scotland and since taking over as Convener, I have witnessed attainment improving in our Schools.”

Liz, married for 48 years to Doug, a football referee, has three sons Philip, Christopher and Joseph and a daughter Lisa, also an SNP activist and five grandchildren. Prior to her election, she had been “a weaver, a bookie and a College lecturer.”

Jim Barrie, Convenor of the SNP Group on Dundee City Council and presently serving as Social Work and Health Convenor,  was first elected for Logie Ward in a by-election in August 2000 when he ousted Labour. He represented the West End since 2007 and was selected as parliamentary candidate for Dundee West in the General Election of 2010.

Commenting on his decision, Jim said: “As Convenor of the SNP Group and Convenor of Social Work and Health I have enjoyed my 12 years as a Councillor for firstly Logie then the enlarged West End ward, and am sure the City will continue to benefit from an SNP run Council.

“Over the years there have been many successes but in particular I would like to say one of the highlights for me was the opening of Riverside Nature Reserve, something I had strived for over the years and I was delighted that it was during an SNP administration that it finally opened.

“Also, as a former pupil of Harris Academy, the long overdue commitment to rebuild the school, on the Perth Road site, has been accomplished by the SNP, working with our MSP’s and the Scottish Government.

“Harris will be the most modern and state of the art school in the city, along with the nearly finished West End Primary and Nursery School in Blackness Road to replace the outdated Park Place and St.Joseph’s.

“I believe that the SNP has the vision and enthusiasm to continue to move Dundee forward and although I am sad to be leaving, I will continue to be active in my local community and look forward to the West End being represented by Bill Campbell and Vari McDonald.”

Andy Dawson, an SNP veteran and SNP Group Whip who has been involved since the 1970s, is standing down as member for North East Ward.

Andy was first elected in 1999 after taking early retirement from Michelin, he had first become involved in the SNP in the campaigns to elect Gordon Wilson as MP for Dundee East.

Andy, who is married to Helen, has two sons, Will who is SNP Councillor for East End ward and presently Convenor of City Development and Andy (jnr).

Andy said: “I am honoured to have represent the constituents of the North East Ward for 13 years and to take an active part in a number of community organisations in the area.

“I will be sad to step down, which is mainly on doctor’s advice, but I am delighted with the improvements and direction that the Council is taking with the SNP running the Administration.

“I would like to take the opportunity to thank all my colleagues and my constituents for their support and for putting their faith in me during the past 13 years.”

Dundee SNP say Labour’s fuel promise is a “cruel deception”

A Labour promise to reduce every Dundee council tenant’s fuel bill by up to 20% has been branded “a worthless promise, and a cruel deception” by the city’s SNP Housing Convener, Councillor Jimmy Black.

“Labour is making a promise which they cannot possibly keep,” said Councillor Black.

“The idea is that the Council helps people band together to buy cheap electricity and gas. That sounds attractive, but we cannot find anyone who has actually made this work in the UK.

“The consumer organisation Which? is trying to set up a scheme, but major energy suppliers such as British Gas and Scottish and Southern Energy are refusing to take part.

“The SNP has already taken effective action to help cut fuel bills for thousands of council tenants, home owners and private tenants. In council housing, we have invested millions in efficient gas central heating and cavity wall insulation.

“We also aim to cut the fuel bills of tenants living in 678 of our multi storey flats by over 30% … perhaps as much as 40%, by insulating their blocks and bringing in new district heating schemes.

“In the private sector we have promoted the Scottish Government funds for home insulation. And we have a specialist team in the Council which gives energy advice and negotiates lower tariffs for households living in fuel poverty.”

Councillor Black continued, “If there is a realistic way of winning discounts from the fuel companies for the citizens of Dundee, you can be sure that the SNP will do it. But we would first make sure that such a scheme would work.  Labour’s worthless promise is simply a cruel deception.”

VISION WILL SEE RENEWABLES REINDUSTRIALISE CITY

JOBS AND FAMILIES AT THE HEART OF COMMITMENTS

Dundee SNP have today (Tuesday) launched their manifesto for the upcoming council elections, with a commitment to put jobs and families at the heart of the Council’s work, while pledging to reindustrialise the city in the renewables sector.

The First Minister Alex Salmond attended the launch in Dundee where, under the SNP since March 2009, it has gone from being a council with the second highest council tax in Scotland to being one of the most cost-effective councils in Scotland.

Key pledges include transforming the city to make it a hub for renewable technology industries, creating new jobs and apprenticeships as well as investing in education to improve performance and invest extra in leisure and sport facilities.

The SNP pledges £320m to support the local economy through building council houses and five new primary schools, as well as freezing council tax until 2016 and introducing a living wage for all council staff.

Speaking at the launch, Dundee SNP Group Leader Councillor Ken Guild said:

“Dundee SNP are very excited about our policy platform for the years ahead. Since taking over the administration in 2009, Dundee has gone from being a council with poor education inspection reports and the second highest council tax in Scotland, to being one of the most cost-effective councils in Scotland

“Over the next few years we will work tirelessly with other councils and the Scottish Government to build for recovery. Together we will continue to invest in Housing, in schools, support the redevelopment of the Waterfront, and ensure Dundee cashes in on the booming renewables industry.

“Our manifesto commitments include supporting families and creating the right environment for jobs, to make Dundee an even better place to live, work and bring up a family.

“Dundee has real ambition and real potential. We want to re-industrialise this city in the renewables sector, as well as investing in our life sciences, video games and digital media sectors.

“We have achieved a lot in the last three years – but we want to go so much further. We will build for recovery, and above all we will give Dundonians the Council they deserve.”

Dundee SNP Announce Strong Team for Council Elections

The SNP Team for the Dundee Council Elections in May

Although the SNP took control of Dundee City Council in March 2009 they will need to win an additional seat to retain a working majority over all other parties as Independent John Letford, presently the Council’s Lord Provost, has announced that he is to step down in May.

In Dundee, the SNP today formally announced their full team for the election, which includes 11 sitting councillors and five new candidates.

Three of the party’s senior councillors had previously announced that they are to step down; Andy Dawson, who represents North East Ward and two Council Convenors, Education Convenor  Liz Fordyce who represents Maryfield and Social Work Convenor Jim Barrie who is a West End Councillor.

Commenting, Strathmartine Councillor Stewart Hunter, who Convenes the SNP’s Dundee City Association, said: “The SNP goes into the Local Council elections in May with a strong record and growing support across the city. We had unprecedented interest from our members and are therefore able to field a very strong team of candidates.

“The SNP-led Dundee City Council is working hard to keep the city’s regeneration on track and bring hundreds of new green jobs. What we are trying to achieve is no less that the re-industrialisation of Dundee.

“All 32 of Scotland’s local authorities have confirmed in principle that they will accept the Scottish Government’s funding settlement – which will keep council tax frozen, protect teacher numbers, and maintain the 1,000 additional police officers  despite the biggest ever cut in funding from the UK Government.  It is this record of delivery which SNP candidates will stand on in May.

“The SNP has a strong track record of easing the burden on local people with our council tax freeze, constructing new schools, a new leisure centre and new council houses, improving educational attainment and expanding access to free school meals.

“The choice for Dundee’s voters will be to move forward with an SNP-led Council working hard with the SNP Scottish Government and key partners to deliver better services or to go backwards to Labour-Tory coalitions which hiked the Council tax every year and had no vision, no enthusiasm or new ideas.

“The SNP have put forward the best team to move Dundee forward.”

The SNP Team is:

Front L-R: Vari McDonald (West End), Bill Campbell (West End), Gregor Murray (North East), Cllr Ken Guild (The Ferry), Cllr David Bowes (Coldside), Cllr Christina Roberts (East End), Cllr Bob Duncan (Lochee)
Middle L-R: Cllr Ken Lynn (Maryfield), Cllr Will Dawson (East End), Cllr Willie Sawers (North East), Cllr Alan Ross (Lochee), Cllr Stewart Hunter (Strathmartine)
Back L-R: Cllr Jimmy Black (Coldside), John Alexander (Strathmartine), Kevin Cordell (The Ferry), Cllr Craig Melville (Maryfield).

SNP Council Team Moving Dundee Forward in 2012

Elections to Scotland’s local authorities take place in May this year. Since 2007, SNP candidates have been elected in 20 of the 47 local by-elections, more than for any other party and in the last 12 months the SNP has won nine local authority by-elections. In contrast Labour have won only three with the Lib Dems on one seat. The Tories have secured only one by-election win in the last four years.

Since 2007, the SNP has moved into the leadership of Dundee and Stirling Councils and become the lead partner in the administration of Aberdeen City Council. Today, after a no-confidence vote in the Labour administration on Clackmannanshire Council, the SNP  have taken on the leadership there too.

Last week, all 32 of Scotland’s local authorities confirmed in principle that they would accept the Scottish Government’s funding settlement – which will keep council tax frozen, protect teacher numbers, and maintain the 1,000 additional police officers delivered by the SNP Government.

In Dundee, the SNP team of Councillors and Council Candidates has been working to ensure  that the party makes gains to retain control of Dundee City Council and safeguard the service improvements made since taking power in March 2009.

Commenting, SNP  Councillor Stewart Hunter, who represents Strathmartine Ward on Dundee City Council and is the Council’s Deputy Education Convenor, said: “The SNP goes into the Local Council elections in May with a strong record and growing support across the city.

“Dundee City Council is working hard to keep the city’s regeneration on track and bring hundreds of new green jobs. What we are trying to achieve is no less that the re-industrialisation of Dundee.

“All 32 of Scotland’s local authorities have confirmed acceptance of the SNP Government’s funding settlement – which will keep the council tax frozen and protect teacher numbers and the 1,000 additional police officers delivered by the SNP, despite the biggest ever cut in funding from the UK Government.  It is this record of delivery which SNP candidates will stand on in May.

“The SNP has a strong track record of easing the burden on local people with our council tax freeze, constructing new schools, a new leisure centre and new council houses and expanding access to free school meals.

“The choice for Dundee’s voters will be to move forwards with an SNP-led Council which is working hard with the SNP Scottish Government and key partners to deliver better services or to go backwards to the bad old days of Labour-Tory coalitions which hiked the Council tax every year and had no vision, no enthusiasm or new ideas.

“The SNP are moving Dundee forward.”
